New Environment and Civic Services portfolio for Wakefield Council Cabinet

Monday, October 27, 2025

Cllr George Ayre is to lead the newly named Environment and Civic Services portfolio.

The new portfolio better reflects the Cabinet Member’s full range of responsibilities and will help drive delivery across some of the Council’s most important functions.

“This portfolio is about the services people see and depend on every day. Keeping Wakefield clean and green. Looking after our parks and public spaces. And supporting families through some of the most important moments of life.

“I know what a big responsibility it is to lead a portfolio with highly visible services in every community. So, I’m going to have a strong focus on building on the great work that already happens across our district and delivering for everyone who relies on us.”

The Environment and Civic Services portfolio brings together waste collection, recycling, parks, weddings, funerals, cemeteries, and climate action.

From managing the district's waste, street cleansing and tree services. To maintaining parks and caring for families through weddings, funerals and bereavement. And tackling climate change and boosting recycling. The new portfolio reflects the essential services residents rely on every day.

Cllr Mohamed Ayub will continue as Deputy Cabinet Member.
