New Economic Growth Plan sets out how Wakefield is open for business

Thursday, July 30, 2026

Wakefield Council is set to launch a new Economic Growth Plan at WX next week. The plan aims to create more opportunities for local businesses to grow and more high-quality employment opportunities for local people.

On Tuesday, 4 August, business leaders and partners will come together to hear about work to attract investment, create high-quality jobs, and support an even more skilled workforce across the district.

“Our ambition is for Wakefield to be the best place to do business in the North of England.

“We want to see investment bringing more high-quality jobs to Wakefield. For our area to be a great place to start and expand your business. And for more people to have the chance to stay local and succeed locally.

“Whether you’re already invested in Wakefield’s future or want to get more involved. This is a great chance to connect, share insights, and join the conversation that’s shaping our local economy.

“Our message is clear. Wakefield is open for business.”

Cllr Karl Johnson

Leader of Wakefield Council

Cllr Karl Johnson

At the event, priorities for supporting growth, investment, and opportunity will be highlighted. There will be a particular focus on the high growth sectors that are expected to drive the district's future success. They include advanced manufacturing, logistics, and creative industries.

The session will also outline plans to support businesses and to help people to develop their skills at all stages of their careers, including through apprenticeships and on-the-job training. A key part of delivering this will be making the most of Wakefield’s strengths with great transport links, a strong manufacturing base, and growing numbers of people working in creative roles.

Cllr Johnson will open the event and introduce the new plan. Remarks from Tony Reeves, Chief Executive of Wakefield Council, will then be followed by a panel discussion featuring local business leaders.

The Economic Growth Plan has been developed using insights and recommendations provided by the Wakefield Futures Commission.

Limited spaces for the event are still available. If people want to attend, they need book in advance at https://www.wakefieldfirst.com/events/aug-2026/wakefield-economic-growth-plan-launch-event/
