Investing in your roads

Friday, November 14, 2025

Keeping our district moving is one of our top priorities. That’s why we’re investing over £20m into our roads over the next two years.

Cllr Matthew Morley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways

Councillor Matthew Morley

We work around the clock to keep your roads and footpaths safe and well maintained. Here are just some of the things we did last month:

October 2025

Altofts

Our teams repaired the road and channel blocks that support drainage running alongside King Street. It’s all part our work to keep roads in a good state of repair and prevent bigger issues occurring.

Our teams were also out at Bransdale Avenue, to repair a sunken area in the footpath, making it safer for everyone to use.

Castleford

You might have seen our teams out in Castleford last month. It’s one of our busiest towns and we work hard to keep roads and pathways in good condition, including carrying out localised resurfacing.

At Parklands, Austin Road and Fryston Road, the team took out damaged flagstones and made repairs to the road surfaces, so they are smooth and safe.

They also at worked at Pioneer Way, in Whitwood to repair the footpath.

Your safety comes first, and these improvements are essential for reliable and safe travel.

Featherstone

We’ve been working on filling-in defects and repairing sections of the road surface at Lea Lane, Purston Jaglin.

These improvements are essential and support you to travel safely and reliably.

Hemsworth

We’ve conducted targeted surface restoration and other essential repairs to maintain your roads.

As part of the programme, we completed surface repairs and other maintenance work on Kirkby Road, Hemsworth. These smaller projects help prevent bigger problems occurring in the future.

Horbury

We’ve been undertaking surface repairs and other maintenance work in the area.

Work has completed at Gagewell Drive, Gagewell View, Stannard Well Lane, and High Street.

We’re committed to safety, and these repairs are crucial for maintaining safe and efficient roads.

Lupset

Our teams have been hard at work resurfacing George A Green Road, Lupset.

The completion of this work makes it easier for residents, visitors, and businesses to move around the area.

Ensuring safe travel is our priority, and our work helps keep roads open and secure for everyone.

It’s all part of our commitment to keeping the district running smoothly.

Ossett

We’ve completed a resurfacing scheme at Gunson Crescent and carried out other maintenance work at Mapplewell Crescent and Mapplewell Drive - this included repairing areas that showed signs of deterioration.

This work helps roads to stay safe now and into the future.

Pontefract

At Westfield Avenue, we removed and replaced damaged flagstones and relaid them so they’re safe to use. These repairs are part of our programme of maintaining our roads and pavements.

Stanley

We have been busy completing work at Saint Peter's Crescent, Stanley. We carried out work on a footpath that was excavated and resurfaced. This will make the path better and safer for all users.

South Kirkby

At Mill Lane, South Kirkby we completed road resurfacing work.

By completing this work, it becomes easier and safer for those travelling in and around the area. It’s part of our programme of work to make improvements that benefit residents, visitors and businesses.

Upton

We carried out major road repairs with resurfacing work at Common Lane and at New Lane.

These projects help improve safety on our roads and are essential to ensure reliable and efficient travel.

Wakefield

We’ve carried out lots of work to improve our city’s roads and keep traffic flowing - especially at busy times.

Our teams have carried out resurfacing work at Ings Road, and Standbridge Lane, Stand Bridge. These major repairs help keep our roads moving and allow people to get around the district safely.

Localised repairs to the road surface were carried out at Sycamore Street, Belle Vue and at Field Lane, Thornes.

Footpaths were also repaired – at Mount Crescent, Thornes, and at Belgravia Road, St Johns.

We carried out work to level surfaces at Pioneer Way, Whitwood and Hollingthorpe Avenue, Hall Green.

Other maintenance work involved repairing channel blocks on Melbourne Road, St Johns, to support drainage. And at Hill Top Road, Hill Top, we made repairs to the verge, and kerbs.

Woolley

At Woolley Grange, we conducted targeted surface restoration and carried out other essential repairs to maintain the main road leading into the estate (The Grange).

Wrenthorpe

At Lindale Garth we made repairs to the footpath. This work aims to help all users to get around safely.

Thank you

To carry out this work, we must sometimes close roads and put temporary diversions in place. We always try to keep disruption to a minimum and carry out work as quickly as we can, without compromising on quality.

Thank you for bearing with us while we continue to improve your roads.

The table above shows just some of the work we’ve been doing. A detailed programme of work carried out across the district is also available.
