Investing in your roads

Thursday, July 17, 2025

Keeping our district moving is one of our top priorities. That’s why we’re investing over £20m into our roads over the next two years.

Cllr Matthew Morley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways

Councillor Matthew Morley

We work around the clock to keep your roads and footpaths safe and well maintained. Here are just some of the things we did last month:

June and July 2025

Bretton

Making sure our roads have safe, reliable drainage solutions improves safety and reduces the risk of future damage.

We have carried out repairs to the brickwork and replaced the frame and covering on an existing gulley on Huddersfield Road.

Badsworth

We have completed work to excavate and install an 87meter cable link for telecoms data in Badsworth.

We are committed to supporting our high streets and local businesses and this scheme has improved connectivity by providing new data-fibre access.

Castleford

We have been making repairs and improvements to pavements across the district. This includes the completion of a footway resurfacing scheme in Castleford.

The new surface will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering making our pavements safer for everyone.

Darrington

Our teams were out in Darrington, supporting of the Darrington 5-Mile Run.

To ensure the safety of runners and spectators, we put temporary road closures and diversions in place to make sure everyone got to enjoy the event.

Featherstone

We have been carrying out road maintenance in Featherstone including carrying out work to patch up areas that showed signs of deterioration. We also installed new Channel Blocks, adjusting the previous level to provide better drainage.

By maintaining our roads properly and channelling surface water away, not only are we making them safer we are also helping to reduce the need to carry out costly large-scale repairs.

Glasshoughton

We have finished installing over 80 meters of new railings in Glasshoughton.

By creating physical barriers between pedestrianised areas and hazardous zones, such as busy roads, steps, drops and high-risk fall spots, we are helping to keep everyone safer.

Hemsworth

You may have seen our team in action from Holly Lodge up to the Cemetery and wondered what they were up to. We have been using specialist CCTV cameras to carry out surveys of the drains in the area.

We know the British summer can be temperamental and doesn’t last forever. When wetter weather comes, and we know it will, we want to be sure our drains in the area are clear. That way they will be able to carry away surface water and cope with seasonal bouts of heavy rainfall.

Horbury

We were happy to assist in managing traffic during The Horbury Show 2025. By installing temporary traffic lights during the event, we were able to control how long traffic came to a standstill.

This helped reduce delays on the roads and prevented the area becoming gridlocked. By effectively managing the traffic we helped keep our roads moving, and minimised delays for anyone not visiting the show.

Knottingley

Our team were busy in Knottingley throughout June and July. You may have seen us setting up and removing temporary traffic management measures. This was to allow Topographical Surveys to be carried out.

We inspected and replaced manhole covers and frames on Springfield Avenue, to help keep Castleford’s roads safe. And we carried out road repairs from the Amazon warehouse to 200m north of Ferrybridge Services Slip Road. We looked for any defects in the road, then repaired and sealed them.

By maintaining our roads and keeping surfaces sealed and in good condition it reduces the number of potholes and other damage caused by wear and tear. This reduces the need to carry out major repairs, keeping motorists motoring!

Middlestown

We carried out a sweep of the carriageway before applying a new surface dressing treatment in Middlestown.

To minimise disruption, we ensured our team carried out the work as quickly and effectively as possible. Meaning we only had to close the road for a single day.

We also carried out work on Coxley Lane so that new cables could be installed underground.

Netherton

It may be summer now, but we’re always planning ahead. That’s why our team has been working hard in Netherton. Resurfacing work completed in Netherton Place and included drainage channels to prevent flooding. These smaller projects help prevent bigger problems occurring in the future.

Nostell

We’ve been busy carrying out repairs in Nostell, including inspecting and replacing manhole covers. It is important that drain covers and grids are installed correctly. Damaged and missing covers can be extremely dangerous, especially in the dark.

By keeping on top of minor repairs and looking after our roads, it reduces the need for costly major work that would be necessary if they weren’t properly maintained.

We also arranged new temporary traffic safety measures to be put in place. This was so work could be carried out from rear of The Willows to locate and repair an underground telecoms duct. By carrying out this work, services can be provided to properties as part of larger fibre to the home scheme.

Notton

We received reports of missing manhole covers on Notton Lane and George Lane.

To prevent any accidents or injury occurring our team sprang into action and quickly installed replacements. Stolen or damaged covers can be extremely damaged, especially in the dark. Please let us know if you spot a missing cover anywhere in the district.

Ossett

Our team got to work in Ossett, starting outside Lyndhurst. First, they installed a dropped crossing, to make crossing the road safer for pedestrians.

They then replaced a lit bollard with a new more cost-effective unit that doesn’t need to consume electricity or be lit.

Outwood

We’ve completed a resurfacing scheme on the full length of the footpath from the junction of Leeds Road in Outwood, all the way up to house number 26.

This new surface will provide a safer, durable, long-lasting covering for this footway.

Pontefract

We’re continuing to install new bollards in Pontefract town centre. These measures will help to keep pedestrians in the town safe during busy times. We’ve also been maintaining and improving footpaths in Pontefract. Starting at the entrance to Pontefract Golf Club and stretching all the way to the entrance of Pak Hill Reservoir. We completed a resurfacing scheme providing a new safer, durable, long-lasting covering on the pavement.

We carried out inspections of the grids around the railway bridge. This was so we could replace any that were damaged and prepare for them street cleaning. By keeping the district’s network of grids and drains well maintained we are maximising their ability to cope with seasonal bouts of high rainfall.

South Elmsall

Safety on our roads is our main priority. Our team have replaced speed camera road markings in South Elmsall.

We have made these markings clearly visible, to help keep our roads safe. By ensuring everyone keeps to the speed limit, we can help reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on our roads.

South Hiendley

We installed a range of temporary traffic management solutions to keep traffic moving and minimise disruption in South Hiendley.

This was so work could be carried out to trim and fell trees, creating a safe clearance between the vegetation and the high voltage overhead electricity supply.

Stanley

In Stanley we have been carried out resurfacing on Premier Way. This included adding a new, durable, long-lasting surface that not only looks great but improves safety and drainage.

Wakefield

In Wakefield city centre we installed temporary new traffic management measures to keep traffic moving in the city. This was while a new water supply was put in to provide water to the new homes being built at Gills Yard and near Rishworth Street.

We also carried out repairs to damaged block paving and kerbs between the junction of Westgate and Bell Street. Our team installed 300 square meters of patching work to Field Lane, and also replaced grid covers.

Wentbridge

In Wentbridge we completed a resurfacing project from Northwood House to The Red House. This new, durable, long-lasting surface not only looks great, it also but improves safety and drainage.

Woolley

Our team set up traffic management solutions to temporarily divert traffic while a 290-meter telecoms cable was installed.

This new cable will link to existing telecoms cables in the area as part of the fibre to the home scheme. Providing better coverage for the area.

We also responded to reports of a missing gulley cover on New Road and arranged a replacement to prevent accidents or injury occurring.

Thank you

To carry out this work, we must sometimes close roads and put temporary diversions in place. We always try to keep disruption to a minimum and carry out work as quickly as we can, without compromising on quality.

Thank you for bearing with us while we continue to improve your roads.

The table above shows just some of the work we’ve been doing. A detailed programme of work carried out across the district is also available.
