Investing in your roads

Our teams have been out and about across the district, carrying out a wide range of improvements. This work helps to help keep people moving safely and keeps our roads and footways in good condition. Here’s a quick round-up of what’s been happening near you:

Ackton

The team has removed the 'cattle crossing' sign on Loscoe Lane.


Airedale

On Kings Avenue in Airedale, road repairs have been completed, creating a smoother surface for people travelling through the area.


Castleford

It’s been a busy time for our teams in Castleford, with carriageway resurfacing completed on a number of streets including Back Garden Street and Wheldon Road.

We’ve also improved footways at Falcon Drive.

Additionally, on Green Lane in Cutsyke the team have restored the verge and grip and removed the barriers from the site.


Chequerfield

In Chequerfield, carriageway repairs have been completed on Chequerfield Road to help provide safer journeys for road users.

On Rookhill Mount, footway repairs have been carried out to create a safer and more even surface for pedestrians.


Cutsyke

An 'End Route' Cycle Bollard has been installed on Bruce Smeaton Way.


Darrington

On Valley Road in Darrington, the verge has been restored with new soil and grass seed, helping to keep the roadside looking tidy and well maintained.

Meanwhile, on Leys Lane works have been completed to improve the condition of the roadside area and help keep the route well maintained.


Featherstone

The puffin crossing on Pontefract Road near Featherstone Academy has been refurbished to help all users travel safely and easily.


Flanshaw

The team has resurfaced the carriageway on Homestead Drive, improving driving conditions.


Gawthorpe

On High Street in Gawthorpe, new topsoil and grass seed have been added to the verge, helping the area look greener and more attractive.


Glasshoughton

At the Park Road roundabout in Glasshoughton, chevron block paving has been relaid, helping to keep the roundabout in good condition and easier for road users to navigate.


Heath

A bund has been installed on Doncaster Road to help manage water runoff and protect the surrounding area from surface water.


Kinsley

On Tombridge Crescent, drainage works have been completed by the team to help rainwater drain away more easily.


Knottingley

The footway has been improved on Racca Green.

The team has also repaired a barrier on the A162 near Knottingley, helping to improve safety for road users.


Lofthouse

Resurfacing work has been completed on the carriageway on Lingwell Court, helping to provide safer journeys for drivers.


Lupset

The carriageway on Sherwood Grove in Lupset has been resurfaced, to provide a smoother journey for drivers. And the 4m pedestrian guardrail (PGR) on Horbury Road has been replaced to help improve safety for pedestrians and road users.


Middlestown

With safety a priority, the carriageway on New Road in Middlestown has been resurfaced.

Other maintenance has also been completed, with ironworks repaired on Sandy Lane to help keep the road in good condition.


Normanton

A range of improvements has been completed in Normanton. A footway slurry seal has been applied on Queensway, helping to improve the condition of the footway.

As part of general maintenance works, tree pit works have been carried out on Gladstone Street, and a bollard has been replaced on Assembly Street to help keep pedestrians safe and help keep the street safe and in good condition. 


Ossett

We have refurbished the junction at Manor Road/Sowood Lane, helping to improve safety and ease of travel for road users.

On Towngate, tree pit works have been completed as part of ongoing maintenance, while in South Ossett, two speed ramps on Sowood Grange have been replaced to help manage vehicle speeds and improve road safety.


Outwood

Our teams have repaired footpaths on Broadmeadows in Outwood.


Pontefract

There’s been a range of improvements in Pontefract. This included the laying of one tonne of recycled material on Cobblers Lane to help maintain the road surface.  

We have replaced 18 metres of pedestrian guardrail (PGR) on Southgate to improve safety for pedestrians and road users. And completed footway levelling and channel repairs on Wakefield Road to create smoother walking routes and support drainage.


Portobello

Carriageway resurfacing has been completed on Castle Avenue, improving driving conditions for safer travel.


Sandal

We have completed topsoil and grass seeding works on Pledwick Lane in Sandal to improve the appearance of the area and encourage healthy grass growth.


South Elmsall

Crossing and carriageway repairs have been completed on Broadway, helping to improve safety and make travel more comfortable.On the Priory Estate, footway resurfacing and kerbing works have been carried out to improve access for people walking through the area.


South Kirkby

Resurfacing works have been carried out in South Kirkby, with carriageway repairs on West Street to improve the road surface and provide safer travel for road users.


Stanley

Our hard-working team have been out in Stanley carrying out a variety of improvements. This includes carriageway resurfacing on Samuel Drive and Firth Close, providing smoother and safer journeys for road users.

The team have also been busy cutting back foliage on walking routes 28, 34 and 37, helping to keep them clear, safe and accessible for residents and visitors.

On Bottom Boat Road, drainage improvements have been completed to help water drain away more easily.


St Johns

On Blenheim Road in St Johns, carriageway repairs have been carried out, helping to keep the road in good condition for all.


Thornes

In Thornes, the footway on Field Lane has been resurfaced, making it easier and safer for people to walk along.

A new crossing has also been built on Thornes Road, helping people cross with improved safety.


Wakefield

It’s been very busy in Wakefield, with a range of improvements completed across the district. On Thornes Lane, carriageway repairs and the installation of a new Wakefield bollard have helped improve road safety and maintain the highway network.

At Ferry Lane Canal Bridge, refurbishment works have been completed and foliage has been cut back along the footpath, helping to keep the route safe for all.

Bollards have been re-installed on Westgate (Silver Street) and Burton Street to help protect pedestrian areas and improve safety. Nine bench slats have also been replaced on the Bullring, helping to keep public spaces well looked-after.

Investigative works have also taken place on Zetland Street and Brook Street, including sinkhole and highway investigations to help identify issues early and support future maintenance work.


Walton

We have completed carriageway resurfacing on Oak Tree Meadow and Chestnut Avenue, providing smoother and safer journeys for road users.

On The Grove, drainage improvements have also been made to help stop water collecting on the road surface.


Whitwood

As part of drainage improvements, the team has carried out drainage connection work on Whitwood Common Lane, and installed a 6m road drain on Wood Lane to help prevent water from collecting on the road.


Wintersett

Repairs have been completed to the footbridge on Wintersett Footpath 1, helping to improve access for walkers and other users.

To carry out this work, we must sometimes close roads and put temporary diversions in place. We always try to keep disruption to a minimum and carry out work as quickly as we can, without compromising on quality.
