Investing in your roads
Friday, September 26, 2025
Keeping our district moving is one of our top priorities. That’s why we’re investing over £20m into our roads over the next two years.
Cllr Matthew Morley, Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways

We work around the clock to keep your roads and footpaths safe and well maintained. Here are just some of the things we did last month:
August 2025
Ackworth
Making sure drainage systems are working well is an important part of how we keep your roads and pavements safe.
We’ve recently carried out work to repair pipework and drainage gullies outside Beech House in Ackworth. This will help increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
Road maintenance was also carried out at Long Lane, High Ackworth.
Airedale
Last month we completed necessary road maintenance at Stansfield Drive and resurfacing work at Camden Drive and Queens Road.
Castleford
Castleford is one of the busiest towns in our district, so maintaining your roads and pavements here is an ongoing priority. We’ve been carrying out surface repairs to various areas including on:
• Camden Road
• Chequerfield Lane
• Chalkbalk Lane
• Queens Road
• Royds Avenue.
We also worked to reconstruct a footpath between Hunt Street and Lumley Street.
There was also work to improve drainage carried out at Lisheen Avenue.
Crigglestone
By keeping on top of minor repair work we keep motorists motoring, reducing the need for longer road closures and diversions. Last month we completed road repairs in Crigglestone, at Hopewell Way and at Woodmoor Drive.
Crofton
We keep an eye on trees to make sure they’re safe. If left unchecked, they can become a risk. At Oakenshaw Lane, our team went out to remove a tree that had been inspected and deemed unsafe. It was affected by Ash die-back and was close to the railway line and bridge.
Eastmoor
We carried out resurfacing at Fewston Avenue, as part of our ongoing maintenance work across the district.
Flanshaw
As part of our continued programme of maintenance work, we carried out resurfacing at Woodland Rise.
Knottingley
You might have spotted our team out in Knottingley last month. We were making repairs to a traffic signal on Pontefract Road, which also included installing new wiring. Our team also carried out road repairs to Hazel Road and completed a resurfacing project at Quarry Avenue.
Lupset
As part of our ongoing programme to maintain your roads we carried out resurfacing work at Potter Avenue. To help improve road safety a new manhole cover was installed at Waterton Road.
Netherton
Keeping our district connected is how we help bring communities together and maintain accessibility. At Stilington, we resurfaced a public right of way to make it safer and easier to use.
Notton
Our teams carried out work to improve drainage by adding additional gullies and channels at George Lane and the junction of Barnsley Road. This will help deal with autumn leaves and rain during the coming seasons.
Normanton
Work never stops! Our teams are out and about across the district, come rain or shine. Last month we carried out resurfacing work in Normanton, on Fairway Approach and Henderson Avenue.
To support a new housing development, we arranged a road closure at Station Road. This was to allow builders to prepare new roads and drainage to be installed.
Minsthorpe
If you were out and about in Minsthorpe last month you many have seen our team resurfacing Minsthorpe Lane.
Ossett
You may have seen us in Ossett last month installing barriers in the Towngate precinct opposite Co-op, and outside the hardware store. These have been installed as a temporary measure to make the area safe while repairs are made to the paving stones.
We also carried out a resurfacing project on Manor Road and laid a new surface at Dimples Well Court. Drainage work was carried out at Dunston Road at the junction of Station Road.
Pontefract
Many residents rely on public transport, so making sure bus stops and signs are looked after is important. One of our jobs last month was to repair the bus stop at Stuart Road. Our team sprang into action after a road traffic incident and repaired the damage.
We’re continuing our work to install new bollards in Pontefract town centre. These measures will help to keep pedestrians in the town safe during busy times.
At Harewood Avenue our teams have replaced a damaged street lighting column. And at Salter Row, work has taken place to install new bollards. We added new road surfaces to Churchbalk Lane and carried out maintenance work on the road at Tudor Close.
Sandal
We’re continuing our ongoing work to maintain roads in our district, this included putting down a new surface at Marriot Grove, Sandal.
Sharlston
We laid a new surface to Weeland Drive as part of our continued programme of maintenance work.
South Elmsall
We were working hard on Barnsley Road last month. As part of our programme of maintenance work we added new surfacing to the road and carried out drainage works at Manor Farm Estate.
South Ossett
We laid a new surface at Manor Road as part of our continued programme of maintenance work.
South Hiendley
To keep your roads and footpaths safe and in good condition, we carry out a series of resurfacing projects across the district, all year round. Recently our team carried out resurfacing work in South Hiendley at Elizabeth Avenue.
We worked on improving drainage on James Street, by installing new channels and gullies.
Stanley
As part of our road maintenance programme, we laid new road surfaces at Auty Crescent and Riverdale Road.
Last month our teams also excavated and installed new pipes and drainage at Lock Lane, as phase 2 of this work.
Wakefield
We were extremely busy last month in and around the city centre. Have you spotted the newly replaced bollards at the traffic island junction of Grove Street and Ings Lane?
After a road accident on Neil Fox Way, we replaced a column that had been damaged.
As part of our ongoing commitment to road safety, we sent our team over to Ings Road. They cut trenches here for sensors to be installed. These sensors will monitor the flow and volume of traffic and help us determine what future safety measures might be needed.
On Peterson Road we put in a one-way road closure. This is to keep road and pavement users safe after an unsafe excavation on private land was carried out adjacent to the road.
We’ve been busy carrying out surfacing work at Riverside Road, Stanley, at Weeland Road in Sharleston. East Street, in Wakefield and Finch Avenue, Wakefield. We have also carried out maintenance work at Plumpton Road.
Wrenthorpe
As part of our continued programme of improvement work across the district, we completed a resurfacing project at Barnes Avenue. We also carried out maintenance work at Moor Lane.
Thank you
To carry out this work, we must sometimes close roads and put temporary diversions in place. We always try to keep disruption to a minimum and carry out work as quickly as we can, without compromising on quality.
Thank you for bearing with us while we continue to improve your roads.
The table above shows just some of the work we’ve been doing. A detailed programme of work carried out across the district is also available.
