Garden waste collections are back – throw the right items in the bin
Tuesday, April 14, 2026
Wakefield Council is reminding residents that garden waste collections in the district have now resumed and will continue until November.
Whether you are doing a spring clear-out or spending more time in the garden, garden waste can be placed in brown bins, ready for fortnightly collections.
As garden waste collections restart, residents are being asked to check what can and cannot be put into the brown garden waste bins.
Flowers, plants, twigs and branches, hedge trimmings, grass cuttings and weeds can be disposed of in your brown garden bin.
All garden waste collected in the district is recycled and turned into soil improver. Residents can collect the soil improver from their nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Do not put any of the following into your garden waste bin:
food waste including eggshells
- soil, compost, stones or rubble
- anything plastic, metal or glass
- pet waste or pet food
- vacuum contents and hair
- planks of wood, fencing or large branches
- rubbish or recycling
Remember garden forks, plant pots and hosepipes do not belong in the garden waste bins. They must be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre, so they can be disposed of safely and correctly.
If full, any extra garden waste that doesn’t fit in your garden waste bin should be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.
Putting the wrong items in garden waste bins can cause machinery to breakdown and create safety risks for staff at the recycling facility. It also reduces the quality of the soil improver that we can offer to residents. Checking before you bin makes a real difference.
