Exciting improvements taking place in local family and youth hubs
Tuesday, June 16, 2026
Wakefield’s family and youth hubs have undergone a series of improvements to create more vibrant local spaces for children, young people, and families in our district.
“Making sure that facilities for our children and young people in Wakefield are as modern and welcoming as possible is a really important priority for us.
“These upgrades encourage play, exploration, and active lifestyles. And they also provide a comfortable and safe environment for Wakefield families to come together, socialise, and build an even stronger sense of community.”
Cllr Matthew Caton
Cabinet Member for Children & Young People
The improvements in the family hubs include a brand-new sensory room, modernised multi-use spaces, a fully refurbished nursery room, and plans to build a new car park.
Sensory rooms at family hubs in Pontefract and Havercroft have received upgrades, improving spaces for babies and children to relax and explore. With calming lights, interactive features, and inclusive designs, they’re fantastic resources for families to enjoy together.
Other practical updates, including a proposed new car park at Butterflies Best Start Family Hub in Normanton, will improve the experience for visitors to the hub.
At Platform One Youth Hub in Hemsworth, a new bike shed has been installed allowing young people to securely store their bikes and scooters as they enjoy different activities or drop-in sessions.
Family and youth hubs throughout our district are welcoming spaces for children, young people, and families. They each offer a programme of free activities, drop-in sessions, and workshops for the whole family.
