Demolition project starts at former Kellingley Club site
Monday, November 03, 2025
Wakefield Council has begun the first stage of demolition at the former Kellingley Club site, to make way for a new community and sports facility.
"Residents have been waiting a long time to see this building come down, so it’s great to see progress happening on site.
“We’re investing over £6 million to completely transform the site and create a brand-new, purpose-built community and sports facility, that local people can enjoy and be proud of.”
Cllr Jack Hemingway
Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth
Contractors are now on-site carrying out preparatory works. This includes the safe removal of internal fixtures and potentially hazardous materials before the building is taken down.
Work on the site has previously been delayed by repeated vandalism. For safety reasons and to ensure the project can progress, the site has 24-hour security in place. People are asked to stay away from the building during the work.
Funding for the demolition project has been obtained by the Council via the Government’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
The second stage of demolition, which will see the building brought down, is scheduled to start by the new year, with completion due in early 2026.
