City centre clean-up underway as part of Summer of Action

We’ve got teams from right across the Council working together to give Wakefield city centre a fresh look as part of our Summer of Action programme.

Restoring pride in our city by improving some of the busiest streets and public spaces. Making the city centre cleaner, safer and more welcoming for residents, visitors and businesses.

Our cleansing, highways and urban gardening teams are some of those who’ve been in action.

Recent work includes:

• Deep cleaning and sweeping on Jacobs Well Lane. Cleaning the road, as well as around the lay-bys and kerb edges by Wakefield One.
• Sweeping both sides of Westgate - removing leaves, litter and cigarette ends.
• Removing weeds from pavements and block paving on Westgate.
• Clearing overgrown areas around Parliament Street and Smyth Street car park.
• Hedge cutting and strimming around Marsh Way, as well as weeding in the lay-bys and pavements.
• Tidying key green spaces. Including clearing weeds from large flower beds and tree bases. And carrying out maintenance around Jubilee Gardens.

We’ve also been tackling littering and antisocial behaviour. The latest focus is on the area outside Wakefield Exchange. Litter-picking teams, jet washers and mechanical sweepers have been used to clean entrances and surrounding areas, helping to create a safer and cleaner environment for residents and visitors.

Next up is jet washing around Market Street, Queen Street and Westgate. Another important part of the spruce up, it’ll clean up the paths. Helping to make the city centre a more attractive place for everyone to enjoy.

The Summer of Action is a focused programme of improvements that you’ll see and feel making a difference. It was launched in the city centre as a pilot programme by Cllr Karl Johnson, Leader of Wakefield Council. And is a key priority for Wakefield Council’s leadership team.
