Cathedral Quarter plans head back to Cabinet

Wednesday, March 11, 2026

The ambitious Cathedral Quarter transformation proposals are heading back to Cabinet.

The vote at the Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Committee means that Cabinet will get the chance to discuss the points raised at the committee meeting.

“I thank the Committee for the opportunity to answer their questions and support their decision to ask Cabinet to discuss it again. This journey continues to be part of the Council’s agreed democratic process

“The Cathedral Quarter vision paves the way for the biggest transformation in this part of the city for over 40 years. City centres must change to survive and create a long-term, sustainable future. Doing nothing or tinkering around the edges is not an option.

“The decision to build The Ridings over forty years ago was bold and innovative. And the decision makers at that time came up against significant challenge. It is understandable that we face the test too.

“I welcome the opportunity to discuss again the points raised at the committee with Cabinet.”

“The request from scrutiny to reconsider the proposal will be discussed at the meeting on 17 March.

“Cabinet will be asked to consider the points raised in the scrutiny meeting, that relate to their decision made in February. Any determination made by Cabinet at the meeting next week will be the final part of the democratic process for the decision.”

A decision will be made at the next Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 17 March. It starts at 10:30am and can be watched live or later on the Council’s website.
