Castleford Subway to close temporarily for new artistic makeover
Thursday, March 05, 2026
A new series of art installations are headed to Beancroft Subway in Castleford, thanks to funding from Network Rail.
The improvements are part of Wakefield Council’s ongoing work to improve the walking routes between the town centre and the train station.
“We’ve carried out lots of improvement work around Castleford train station recently, and sometimes it’s the smaller projects that make the biggest difference.
“These new artworks celebrate the people, places, and stories that have put Castleford on the map. They’ll give everyone using the subway a great insight into the town and its history.”

This latest upgrade builds on wider improvements already delivered in the area, including resurfaced pedestrian routes, better lighting, the installation of new CCTV cameras, and other new public artworks.
Artist Ellie Way has created a series of pieces, inspired by community engagement sessions where residents shared what Castleford means to them.
To allow the artwork to be installed safely, Beancroft Subway will be closed from 16–20 March. Clear diversion signs will be in place throughout the closure, with an alternative route fully marked out for pedestrians.
