Monday, April 20, 2026
Castleford’s annual Roman Festival returns on Saturday 30 May (10am-4pm).
The free, family friendly festival in Castleford town centre gives visitors of all ages the chance to discover the rich heritage of the town’s Roman past.
“At our popular annual festival visitors can find out more about life in Lagentium – the Roman name for Castleford. There’ll be plenty of hands on activities, live entertainment, and immersive historical experiences for everyone to enjoy.”
Mark Lynam
Corporate Director for Regeneration and Economic Growth
Festival goers can explore the bustling Roman Market and experience the sounds, scents, and sights of a bygone era.
Throughout the day, Castleford’s own Roman Legionary, Marcus Valerius Calvinus, will lead free drop in guided walking tours, uncovering the hidden history beneath the streets of the modern town.
Families can enjoy a theatre performance ‘A Day in Lagentium,’ offering an interactive look at the daily lives of Roman soldiers and civilians, from breakfast to barracks, with all the fascinating details.
Young archaeologists will enjoy the chance to dig for treasures with Pontefract Young Archaeologists Club, where they can learn about excavation tools and archaeological techniques.
The Castleford Heritage Trust will be running a stone flour milling activity. And local venues will also be getting into the festival spirit with free fringe activities at Castleford Indoor Market and Castleford Museum and Library.
Families will love the ‘Roman Mint of Lagentium’ workshop, designing and crafting their own Roman coin to take home. Alongside free face painting and lively street entertainment, the festival promises something for everyone.
