Castleford – A feast for all the senses!

Friday, June 28, 2024

This month Castleford enjoyed a real taste of Summer, with a whole host of international food vendors setting up in the town centre. The successful event follows the recent £2.64m upgrade to Castleford Indoor Market and brought visitors into the town from across the district.

Local residents made reference to the ‘great buzz’ they felt it brought to Castleford, with lots of people taking to social media to promote and praise the effort that had gone into bringing an international line up of chefs and cooks to the town.

With so many international dishes on offer, visitors were spoilt for choice – from souvlaki to noodles, to jerk chicken and cannoli – the aromas and flavours were a feast for all the senses.

It wasn’t just hungry visitors that were celebrating the success of the 4-day event, local businesses also received a boost from the additional visitor numbers.

Business owner Susan Goate posted to Facebook “I have a shop in Castleford selling yarn, fabrics, and haberdashery, initially I thought my takings would be down but today has been excellent, so yes, I’ve had a very good week. I’ve also loved the buzz and energy in town, and I’ve enjoyed sampling the food on offer”.

Annie Cowcill visited the market and shared her thoughts via social media: “I went into town this morning and it was a pleasant change to see plenty of people about. To be fair I only went in to look at the continental market, but did end up buying bits and bobs from various shops.”

For anyone who missed or didn’t get chance to visit the Continental Market more events like this are planned for the coming months. Subscribers to the Regeneration newsletter will be kept up to date as soon as details are confirmed.  Wakefield Council would like to thank everyone who took part, visited and supported the event.
