Boosting biodiversity in the district

Tuesday, February 17, 2026

Our Parks and Greenspaces team has been hard at work improving habitats and encouraging wildlife to thrive across the district. Over the recent months, the team has been clearing grassland and scrub to help boost biodiversity and create healthier, more resilient green spaces.

So far, work has taken place at 13 sites, including Stanley Ferry Flash, South Kirkby Pit Site, and Mill Pond Meadows. With work covering over 25 hectares of land. This is a huge step to making local ecosystems stronger and supporting a variety of plants, insects, birds and other wildlife.

A big thank you to everyone involved for helping to protect and enhance our much loved green spaces.

This winter and early spring, the team will be delivering several major planting projects across multiple parks:

  •  Over 250m² of new herbaceous beds and 25,000 bulbs at sites including Castleford, Horbury, Wakefield, Ossett, Normanton, Featherstone, Wrenthorpe and Outwood.
  • Planting 4,000 trees at Slack Lane, Newmillerdam as part of the White Rose Forest Project.
  • Continuing with biodiversity net gain work and countryside restoration throughout the winter months.

When we boost biodiversity, we create a healthier environment for all. We’re protecting wildlife, improving the air quality and enhancing community wellbeing with more people able to enjoy the green spaces in our district.

The Parks and Greenspaces team’s dedication is making a real difference across the district.
