Big improvements for three local play areas

Wednesday, May 27, 2026

Families across the Wakefield district who use three local parks can look forward to investment in brand-new play facilities this summer.

“Improving play facilities in our parks and open spaces across the district is one of our top priorities. These play areas will be fun spaces where children of all abilities can play, explore and spend time together.”

Cllr Julian Carter

Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services

Cllr Julian Carter

Wakefield Council is investing £3.5 million to bring improvements to local parks and outdoor play areas.

Work has been scheduled in the following areas:

Baker Lane, Stanley (completing 12 June)
£99,000 of upgrades will provide new play equipment for ages 1–14, including toddler and junior units, interactive panels, and new surfacing, fencing and gates. Inclusive features include sensory panels, BSL signage, low-level access and a nest swing.

Church Street, Ossett (starting 15 June)
£99,000 of investment will include new accessible equipment including a wheelchair-friendly roundabout, in-ground trampoline, rope swing, plus improved seating, bins and picnic tables.

Acacia Walk, Knottingley (completing 26 June)
£97,000 of funding will see the addition of new multi-play units, swings and play features, including accessible equipment and a side transferable springie. Benches will also be refurbished, and a new bin will be added.

Cllr Carter added: “These projects will help provide better outdoor play spaces, designed to encourage healthier, happier lifestyles for local families. Each park will offer something unique, with thoughtfully designed equipment tailored to different age groups”
