Beat the Street returns to the Wakefield district

Wednesday, June 10, 2026

Parts of the Wakefield district are set to be transformed into a free, fun, and interactive giant game this summer.

Beat the Street is coming to Normanton and Altofts from Wednesday 10 June to Wednesday 8 July. An activity trail will encourage residents of all ages to walk, wheel, cycle, run and explore their local community.

“We are delighted to be bringing Beat the Street to Normanton and Altofts and to see communities coming together in such a fun and inclusive way.

“This initiative is a fantastic opportunity to help people of all ages become more active while exploring their local area and building connections with others.”

Beat the Street turns the local area into a real-life game, with special sensors known as beat boxes installed on lampposts across the community.

People tap a contactless card or use the app as they travel between beat boxes, earning points for their journeys.

The further people go, the more points they collect, with schools, community groups, workplaces, and families competing in a friendly challenge.

Primary school pupils will receive cards through their schools, while the wider community can pick up a free card or download the app via www.beatthestreet.me

A launch event is taking place on Wednesday 10 June at The Brig, Altofts, 1 St Mary's Road, Altofts, Normanton, Wakefield, WF6 2JH at 9:30am. It will include a community relay with all participating schools across Normanton and Altofts. School pupils, community groups, and partners will join the route, creating a vibrant and energetic start to the campaign.
