Beancroft Subway to get lighting upgrade

Thursday, November 13, 2025

Wakefield Council is due to start work on installing new lighting in the Beancroft Subway beneath Castleford Train Station. The upgraded lighting will improve safety and visibility for pedestrians.

“The new lighting is just one of a series of improvements we have made around the station. We’ve resurfaced key areas, installed brighter lighting and CCTV cameras, added new public artwork, and introduced planters with fresh greenery. All designed to create a welcoming first impression for anyone arriving in town by train.

“Better, brighter lighting in the subway will help everyone feel safer. To complete the electrical work quickly and safely, we’ll need to close the subway for about a week. We’ll work hard to reopen it as soon as we can.”

The work is part of a series of projects being funded by Transpennine Route Upgrade’s First and Last Mile programme.

Wakefield Council secured £720k of funding to deliver a series of improvements aimed at improving popular routes connecting the town and the station.

Beancroft Subway is expected to be closed from 17 to 21 November, while work is carried out. Signs will be in place with an alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists.
