New homes planned for Kirkgate

Subject to planning approval, more than 200 modern, high quality apartments are planned for Kirkgate. The new homes will be built on the site of the former Wilko store and the surrounding area.

An artist's impression of how Kirkgate in Wakefield city centre will look once the new housing development is completed.

Where will the new houses be built?

The site is on the east side of Kirkgate. It runs from the old Wilko building up to the former ABC cinema site.

The Harewood Arms pub is a well known local landmark. It is one of the few Edwardian pubs left in the city. This building will not be affected by the plans. Several other buildings in the area will also remain.

Supporting the city centre

The new homes will support the Cathedral Quarter Project and the wider regeneration of the city centre.

They will provide modern new apartments for people currently living in the Vico Homes tower blocks. These tower blocks are planned to be demolished as part of the Cathedral Quarter proposals.

The new apartments allow residents to stay living in the city centre. They are just across the road, so this will help reduce disruption. And allow residents to remain living in the community they know and love.

A key city centre location

This site was identified in the city centre masterplan. And is a key location for new housing and will help improve an important entrance into the city.

What happens next

A planning application is expected to be submitted in early 2027.
This will follow consultation with Vico tenants and the wider community.

Once completed, the new homes will sit alongside the new Vico Homes development. This development is nearing completion on the former Chantry House site.
