Overview

A £20m bid to the Levelling Up Fund Round 2 for South Kirkby was unsuccessful. This was announced by the government on January 18, 2023.

Despite this, we remain committed to our long-standing work with local communities in South Kirkby. We will continue to collaborate with these communities to achieve our shared goals.

The bid aimed to support three projects in the Hemsworth constituency, specifically in Langthwaite Business Park. These projects aimed to:

  • attract new businesses
  • create employment opportunities
  • provide skills training for young people

The project proposals were developed based on feedback from a public consultation held in June 2022 and have been endorsed by MP Jon Trickett.

 

Projects

Creative Futures

  • a specialist hub to allow Backstage Academy to expand its education provision for students in the live events sector

  • the new building will also accommodate a Council-run Youth Support Hub
    • this will share facilities with Backstage Academy

Creative Cluster

  • two industrial units will be constructed in Langthwaite Business Park
    • this will further the establishment of creative sector employment opportunities

  • this will boost the number of well-paid and highly skilled jobs and encourage growth and investor confidence in the area

Gateway Improvements and Greening

  • enhanced access to the business park and the Creative Futures Hub

  • installation of CCTV and signage

  • greening and improved legibility

Impact

These projects will improve the connections between Langthwaite Business Park and South Kirkby. They will foster a stronger sense of pride in the area and give residents new employment, economic, and skills opportunities.

Timeline

  • submission deadline: 2 August 2022

  • estimated outcome announcement: Autumn of 2022

  • projects completed by: 31 March 2025

  • in January 2023, the Government confirmed that the ‘Transforming South Kirkby’, had been unsuccessful
    • whilst the outcome of the bid was disappointing, the Government have confirmed that there will be another round of the Fund, the details of which are to be provided in due course
