Located 3 miles southeast of Wakefield, Walton Colliery Nature Park consists of lakes and ponds, woodland, and grassland and a section of the Barnsley Canal.

  • Free parking
  • Network of paths through the park for walking and cycling
  • Horse riders welcome - please use designated routes
  • The national Trans Pennine Trail runs through the site
  • Information panels provide the visitor with points of interest

Nature conservation

This is a nature reserve that is managed to protect and improve habitats for wildlife. The wildlife changes with the seasons, and visitors can see different animals like the Cuckoo in the spring and Grass Snakes basking in the summer sun.

The park boasts a variety of wildflowers including Common Spotted and Southern Marsh Orchids.

Volunteers

The Friends of Walton Colliery Nature Park assist the Countryside Officers  to manage and maintain the site. They have previously done site clean-ups and installed a way-marked trail. If you're interested in volunteering, you can join them.
