Accessibility in Libraries

Everyone can use and enjoy their library. We have services and facilities to help library users with a disability or impairment including:

Access

  • Induction loops in all libraries
  • High visibility screen option on all our self-service kiosks
  • Dome magnifiers or magnifying sheets at all libraries
  • Baskets and a small trolley to place items you wish to borrow as you browse - only available at Wakefield Library
  • Our Mobile Library has regular stops throughout the district
  • Our Mobile Library service in your own home is available if you find it difficult to visit your local library due to illness, age or disability
  • Registered assistance dogs are welcome in all libraries

Stock

  • Large print and talking books are available free of charge in all libraries
  • Books from specialist publishers such as Quick Reads and Barrington Stoke to help struggling, reluctant or dyslexic readers
  • Support for emergent readers and English speakers of other language students including Reading Ahead. Please contact us for further information
  • Multi-sensory Bag Books are available for loan to professionals working with children with learning disabilities or visual impairments.

Computers

  • Free Internet access at all libraries
  • A wide range of free Online services to access from home, including talking books, language courses and magazines to download
  • All our computers have Microsoft accessibility options such as screen magnifier as standard
  • Dolphin SuperNova software with large letter keyboard and trackball mouse is available at Wakefield Library
