Refugee Week 2024

Wednesday, June 05, 2024

Refugee Week lets us celebrate the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. It takes place from 17-23 June, coinciding with World Refugee Day on 20 June.

This year’s theme is “Our Home.”

Home can be a place of refuge, a feeling or a state of mind. It can be linked to smells, tastes and sounds. What does home mean to you?

This Refugee Week is about extending warmth and hospitality beyond our homes. Making neighbourhoods and communities feel more welcoming.

Meet Mohammad

Once a Paralympic athlete representing Iran, now an artist. Mohammad Barrangi sought sanctuary in Wakefield after arriving in the UK in 2017.

The Art House in Wakefield supported him when he arrived. They gave him a place to live and studio space so he could practise his art.

Mohammad’s art is currently on exhibition in Leeds. Using his own lived experiences, it tells the story of a fictional young Iranian woman making a journey to England.
