Healthy weight

Why is it a priority?

One of the biggest problems for Wakefield is that there are a lot of people who are an unhealthy weight. This means that they are over or under what is considered a healthy weight for their sex and age. Most of these people are overweight or very overweight (obese).

In the district 28.5 per cent of adults are recorded as obese, this is significantly worse than the average for England.

Being overweight doesn't just affect how we look and feel but can increase how likely we are to become ill. This may include, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, depression and osteoarthritis. The numbers of people in the district diagnosed with these illnesses is slightly higher than the England average.

Recent evidence also suggests that good nutrition is essential for our mental health and that a number of mental health conditions may be influenced by dietary factors.
