SEN Independent Travel Training

Depending on the child's individual circumstances they may require help with their journey to school or college - this is called 'assisted' transport.

The Council is clear in that whilst we will assist parents to get their children to school or college, where appropriate, it is the parents' responsibility to ensure that their child attends school/college. This may involve parents being more involved in taking their child to school/college, rather than them being transported in a taxi or minibus.

SEN transport provides the Council with a 'menu' of transport options tailored to the individual needs and capabilities of each child or young person with an Education, Health and Care Plan. This 'menu' of options includes the following assistance with transport to and from school or college:

  • Independent travel training to enable the young person to travel to/from school/college by public transport
  • Bus pass to enable free travel on a dedicated school bus/public transport
  • Use of 'pick up' points rather than 'door to door' pick up
  • Taxi/minibus with a pupil escort to accompany the child (this could either be a single person journey or 'shared' taxi dependent on the needs of the child/young person)
  • Taxi/minibus without a pupil escort (again this could either be a single person journey or 'shared' taxi dependent on the needs of the child/young person)
