Sandal Castle

Following recent guidance from the Government on reopening, all Council museums plan to reopen in May.

Pontefract Castle grounds and toilets are open as normal and the Liquorice Café is serving takeaway food and drink. Please see www.pontefractcastle.co.uk for details of opening hours

Sandal Castle grounds remain open as normal and the Castle Café is open Friday to Monday 9:30am to 2:30pm.

The romantic ruins of this medieval castle stand in a commanding position overlooking the Yorkshire countryside. The castle is famous for the Battle of Wakefield fought nearby in 1460.

Sandal Castle site is open to the public all year round and parking is free. Visitors can walk around the site and see superb views of the Calder Valley.

The former visitor centre has been converted into the Castle Café, an independent family run café which has proved very popular with visitors due to its fantastic view of the castle.

The castle is currently undergoing conservation work and improvements to the interpretation on site.
