Introducing the Deputy Mayor

Introducing the Deputy Mayor Councillor Tracey Austin

Born in Outwood, Tracey attended Outwood Grange School before becoming a registered childminder and school governor. She raised a young family during this time and became a member of the local junior Chamber of Commerce in Wakefield to develop her career. With their support, she initially attended Wakefield College and then studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, gaining a degree in Early Childhood Studies.

Mental health is a subject close to Tracey’s heart. She has worked for a number of charitable organisations in the Wakefield district who support people with mental health and learning disabilities.  These have been challenging but rewarding roles which Tracey believes has had a positive impact on people’s lives.

Tracey has worked as an Emergency Medical Technician for Yorkshire Ambulance Service for the past six years. She believes it a privilege to work in this environment and particularly rewarding when supporting people at some of the most difficult times of their lives when they need support to manage the impact of trauma.

Tracey has served as an elected member of Wakefield Council for the last thirteen years, initially representing Hemsworth ward for four years. For the past 9 years Tracey has been proud to represent Wakefield North, the ward in which she lives.

Tracey is currently the Vice Chair of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority having been a member for over eleven years. This has provided the opportunity to sit on a number of decision making boards helping support the authority through a number of changes and transition.

Tracey has three children, Dwain, Laura and Connor all of whom live in the Wakefield district. Dwain is Tracey’s eldest child and will be the Deputy Mayor’s consort. He also works for Yorkshire Ambulance Service as a locality manager and in his spare time volunteers for St Johns Ambulance and is involved with the Sea Cadets.

Tracey has two wonderful grandchildren, Zachary (8) and Rosie (4) and enjoys their company whenever she can. She also enjoys travelling and reading during any other spare time.
