Community Grants Scheme

Please note:  The Community Grants Scheme 2021/2022 is currently open and accepting applications.

We recognise that the Coronavirus outbreak is an exceptional event that will have an impact on local community groups and charities.

Communication is essential and we wish to be as helpful as possible during the coming weeks and months so that you can focus on the vital work of supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.  

We understand that there will be times when staff and volunteers will not be available, when beneficiaries may need services to be provided in different ways, or when systems need to be flexible to ensure that needs are met.

If your community, services or organisation are affected by the Coronavirus outbreak, and you have received a grant from us, we are committed to supporting you by:

  • Adapting activities and events – we recognise that you may experience difficulties achieving some of the outcomes we agreed for your grant during the outbreak, so please have a conversation with us if you are affected in this way;
  • Discussing dates – we don’t want to add pressure, so if you think you will struggle to complete a project or get your end of project evaluation to us by the stated deadline please get in touch with us so that we can agree a more realistic time for you to deliver your project or to get things to us wherever possible;
  • Financial flexibility – we know you may need to use your grant differently so that your work can continue. Please give us a call to discuss, as long as what you wish to do fits in with the grant programmes eligibility criteria and spirit of your project we will be flexible wherever possible; and
  • Listening to you – we are here if you want to talk to us about the situation you’re facing, but  we may struggle to talk to you over the phone.  Email us on: and we will get back to you.

The Wakefield Council Community Grant programmes remain operational so if you have submitted an application, or are working on one now, please be reassured that it will be processed in the usual way. While it may not be sensible in some cases for decision making panels to meet, we will encourage a remote response to ensure that funding notifications are not delayed. Grant payments are being processed normally at this time.

We are committed to supporting voluntary, recreational and community groups in the Wakefield District. Allowing groups to enhance existing provision within their respective areas.

Within the Community Grants Team, we are responsible for the management of the Community Grants Scheme.

Grants are given to enhance the development and capability of community groups to engage their communities and carry out activities.

What are the Community Grants Scheme Funds?

There are multiple funds available for groups to access

  • Neighbourhood Improvement Fund
  • Community Development Fund
  • Food Bank Support Fund
  • Local Capital Grants Programme

The table below can be used as quick guide to each Fund. For detailed information on the individual funds, eligibility and how to apply please read the associated Community Grants guidance documentation.

Neighbourhood Improvement Fund 

The purpose of the Neighbourhood Improvement Fund (NIF) is to provide funding to support a wide range of community organisations projects and activities. Each of the 21 Wards in Wakefield are allocated the same amount of NIF Funding each year and all projects must be supported by at least 2 Local Ward Councillor in the group's area. 

The maximum award for the Neighbourhood Improvement Fund is £1000 per application, capped at £2000.

Community Development Fund

The purpose of the Community Development Fund is to provide grants to voluntary, recreational and community groups working within the Wakefield District to support development or activities that address inequalities in health and wellbeing.

The maximum award for the Community Development Fund is £500 per year, per group.

Food Bank Support Fund

The purpose of the Food Bank Support Fund is to help alleviate some of the pressure placed upon food aid providers and increase their capacity to deliver to the wider community. This grant is part of a wider programme of activity which looks to develop existing provision and support to meet increased demand for services from people and families facing crisis.

The maximum award for the Food Bank Support Fund is £1000 per application.

Local Capital Grants Programme

The purpose of the Local Capital Grants Programme (LCGP) is to provide funding to support capital projects within Wakefield communities. Each of the 21 Wards in Wakefield are allocated the same amount of LCGP Funding each year and all projects must be supported by all 3 Local Ward Councillor of the group's area in order to progress.

Who can apply?

Applications are accepted from constituted voluntary, community, recreational groups and special interest forums, based and working within the Wakefield District.

These are typically the following organisations:

  • Unregistered community group
  • Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
  • Charitable company
  • National Organisation
  • Community Interest Company (CIC)

When to apply?

Complete applications are assessed at a monthly panel. It is expected that applications are submitted no later than two weeks prior to the subsequent panel, to allow for eligibility assessment and processing.

Applicants should also note that panel's cannot take place during Purdah which is the period leading up to an election and plan the submission of their applications accordingly.

How to apply

To apply for a Community Grant:

  1. Read the Application Guidance and blank terms and conditions of grants.
  2. If you would like support applying or submitting, attend an application support session.
  3. Submit an application using our online application form and email your supporting evidence in one email to by 5:00pm on the due date. Incomplete applications will not be assessed.
  4. Alternatively, you can download the Application form for the specific fund you are applying to and email the completed application (Application form and all supporting evidence) in one email to by 5:00pm on the due date. Incomplete applications will not be assessed.
  5. Once submitted, you may not hear from us until the outcome of your grant has been finalised.
