The Marriages, Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration Etc.) Act 2019

The Act will modernise how marriages are registered for the first time since 1837, by introducing a marriage schedule system and registration in an electronic register. It will move away from the current paper register, introducing a more secure system for keeping marriage records that is more efficient and simpler to administer. The electronic register will also allow for the names of parents of the couple (mother / father / parent) to be included in the marriage entry and on marriage certificates, instead of only their fathers' names as is currently the case.

Regulations to confirm the policy detail have been laid in Parliament and, subject to approval, will come into force on 4 May 2021.

Your marriage ceremony in Wakefield Town Hall / Pontefract Town Hall or at an Approved Venue in the Wakefield District

New marriage legislation means that the way your marriage is registered will change from 4th May 2021.

If you gave notice before 12th April 2021

  • On the day of the ceremony you will have the option to include up to 4x parents on your marriage schedule/certificate. You may have already provided details of your Father when you gave notice.  This has now changed and you can include your mother, father and/or step-parent, up to 4 people.
  • Between now and the day of your wedding please decide who you would like to have on your marriage certificate and in what order you would like them as this is your choice. Example: Father, Mother or Mother, Father or Mother, Step-parent, Father, Step-parent. A reminder that step-parent is/or has been married to your natural parent. You will need to know your parents full names, and occupations on the day of the ceremony so that person officiating can record these.

All marriages

  • On the day of your ceremony you will not be invited to sign a marriage register or take away with you a hand written marriage certificate.  You will instead be invited to sign a marriage schedule which is an A4 paper document.
  • We aim to input all marriage schedules within 7 days from when the marriage took place.  Once inputted we will then produce the number of marriage certificates you have requested and send them out by first class signed for post.  You will be asked to pay this as part of your final fee.

If you give notice after 12th April 2021

Any person who attends to give notice of their intention to marry after the 12th April will be provided with the following information;

  • The Schedule would normally be sent by first class signed for post, which carries a cost of £2.50, a fee which you will need to pay at the time of their notice appointment.  The couple have the option to arrange an appointment to collect the schedule after the date they are due down.  Collection is available by appointment only at Wakefield Town Hall or Pontefract Town Hall
