School Admissions Policy Consultation 2021/2022

Community/Voluntary Controlled Schools

Wakefield Council is consulting on its School Admissions Arrangements for all Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools within the Wakefield District.

The proposed changes to the School Admissions Policy are:

  • To extend the provision in the oversubscription criteria to give the highest priority for admission to children who were previously in state care outside of England. This provision does not alter the order of priority for Looked after Children and Previously Looked after Children;

  • The LA proposes to close the waiting lists at the end of the summer term in July (rather than 31 August) for the previous school year and only operate the waiting lists for the children who have re-applied for the following school year.

The proposed changes to the Co-ordination Scheme are:

  • Waiting lists – the corresponding changes have been made in the In-Year Co-ordination Scheme to mirror the changes in the Admissions Policy;

  • Right of Appeal – wording changes to make it clear that parents cannot appeal against a refusal for admission outside of the normal age group. Such decisions must be reviewed via the complaints procedure;

  • In-Year Co-ordination – wording changes to make it clearer that Wakefield LA does not co-ordinate in-year applications for school places in any of our neighbouring LA school and vice versa. These changes will make it clear that where a Wakefield parent wishes to preference a school in another LA's area the application must be made direct to that LA and if a parent not resident in Wakefield wishes to preference a Wakefield school they must apply directly to Wakefield LA. This process has been in place for a number of years however the In-Year Co-ordination Scheme has been amended so it is clearer for parents to better understand.

Academies and Voluntary Academies

The Governing Body of these schools are the Admission Authority and do not have to follow the Local Authority's Admissions Policy although a number of Trust Schools and Academies do adopt the Local Authority's Admissions Policy.

If an academy proposes any changes to its Admissions Policy the Governing Body will also have to undertake a six week consultation period that has to be finished by 31 January 2021.

Details of each academy's Admissions Policy and any changes they are making for 2022/2023 will be available on their website. The proposed Admission Policies for these schools will also be attached to this page as we receive them from each school.

Voluntary Aided (Church) Schools, Foundation School and the Education Ossett Community Trust Schools

These schools also set their own admission arrangements.

Any changes to their Admissions Policies will also have a six week consultation period that has to be finished by 31 January 2021.

Details of each school's admissions policy and any changes they are making for 2022/2023 will be available on the school's website.

If you would like a paper copy of any of the Admission Policies or catchment boundary maps available on our website, please contact the School Admissions Team on 01924 306052 or email koxer@wakefield.gov.uk
