This committee is specifically involved in scrutinising, monitoring and reviewing:

Economic Growth

  • all matters relating to the economic and urban regeneration of the District
  • the Economic Strategy for Wakefield;
  • the effectiveness and performance of the Wakefield Enterprise Partnership
  • commercialisation and the local economy;
  • work undertaken to support and drive regeneration including:
    • planning
    • investment
    • economic and business sector development
    • business support
    • enterprise and employment (including barriers to employment in the District);
  • sustainable development and planning policy;
  • consultation and liaison with all organisations involved in the regeneration of the District;
  • attracting business investment in Wakefield;
  • measures being undertaken to reduce the number of people who are on out of work benefits and help people to overcome barriers to work;
  • improving town centres

Housing

  • the delivery of targets within the Wakefield Housing Plan in relation to:
    • building new houses to meet Local Development Framework targets;
    • the demand for affordable homes;
    • ensure new housing meets specialist needs;
    • planning housing with the infrastructure needed to create 'good places';
    • ensuring housing supports work to tackle homelessness;
    • improving housing conditions and tackling fuel poverty;
    • ensuring the private rented sector is safe, secure and managed well
  • the provision of homelessness and housing advice services, including rough sleepers
  • regulation and enforcement of statutory provisions relating to private sector housing
  • housing matters relating to the accreditation and licensing of private landlords
  • the promotion and monitoring of partnerships to achieve wider strategic housing objectives;
  • efforts to provide more sustainable and affordable housing, both for rent and for students, in both the public and private sectors

Skills

  • response to the skills challenge in the District
    • this includes measures being undertaken to ensure that the training needs of employers, employees and prospective employees are met;
  • apprenticeships and the impact of the apprenticeship levy in the District

Culture, Sport and Tourism

  • markets;
  • leisure, sport and physical activity within the District;
  • libraries and cultural services;
  • major Events and Tourism
