Over the next four weeks, work will start on the internal fixtures and fittings, as well as getting all the gym equipment in place and training staff, to ensure the leisure centre is ready to welcome customers.

The construction of the leisure centre has come in on budget and on schedule. During the build, the contractor Willmott Dixon, has supported the nearby schools and community projects. The construction company also employed people from the local and took on a local young person as an apprentice, who now has a permanent job with APS Engineering, who partner Willmott Dixon.

Cllr Jacquie Speight, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: "The new facility looks fantastic and is the high quality and modern leisure centre that our residents need and deserve.

"The construction project has gone very well and the contractor has had a positive impact on the local community, bringing jobs and investment to this area.

"Work on the interior of the facility is now underway and I am delighted that in a just few weeks we can welcome our first customers to Minsthorpe Leisure."

Minsthorpe Leisure offers a range of facilities including a 25 metre, six-lane, swimming pool, studio space and a 50 station air-conditioned gym.

The swimming space will have wide range of programmed activities, and means that the new pool will offer swimming opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, including those who want to learn to swim, as well as those who want to use water space to keep fit and active.

The studio space is also extremely versatile and will be able to cater for a full range of activities from toddler soft play and baby gym to Zumba and other keep fit classes.

Car parking, cycle storage and a school bus pull in, are all conveniently located on site.

The old Minsthorpe Pool closed in March 2013 for essential maintenance after in an inspection revealed it needed major repairs. It permanently closed in July 2013 after it was discovered that the cost of repairs was over £1.2million, which would still leave the south east of the district with a dilapidated facility.

Plans for a new £5million leisure centre were submitted for planning permission in September 2016, after a public consultation showed over whelming support for the new facility to be built at the Ash Grove

Work started on site in December 2016 and the new Minsthorpe Leisure will be officially opened on 15 March, and will open to customers from 3pm that day.

Details of the official opening will be revealed shortly. For information on Aspire health and fitness membership go to www.wakefield.gov.uk/minsthorpe
