Wakefield Careers Event introduces young people to Construction Industry

Date: 5/10/2016

Over 1,000  people attended the annual Career Options event in Wakefield last week.

The annual Wakefield Options event showcases apprenticeships across the district and provides young people with information and advice about colleges and universities across the region.

One of the highlights of this year's event was the introduction of a 'Construction Zone'. It was launched by Wakefield Council's Apprenticeship Hub to demonstrate the wealth of career opportunities available in this sector in the Wakefield district. The Construction Zone featured interactive displays, thermal imaging drones and advice on interview preparation. It featured local employers such as Petter Duffy Ltd. Bardsley Construction and the Multifuel 2 Project in Knottingley.

The event was opened by Cllr David Jones, Wakefield Council's Deputy Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills.

Cllr Jones said: "The construction sector is vital to Wakefield District with so many projects happening in our district, the sector is growing year on year and is predicted to grow by over 40% by 2031. The event has been a great opportunity to introduce construction to young people and make them aware of the many career opportunities available locally to them. The support we've had from our districts schools in bringing over 1,000 young people to the Career options event will hopefully lead to our young people aiming to fill these vacancies."

The event took place at The Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield on Wednesday 28 September.
