Castleford's rich Roman heritage is being celebrated in style on Sunday (September 11) with the launch of a new festival to be held in the town.

Castleford Roman Festival, sponsored by Lateral Property Group, will be held in Henry Moore Square from 10am to 4pm, offering exciting, educational and fun activities with a modern twist.

As part of the celebrations, Henry Moore Square will be home to a Grande Arena, with the Market Hall decorated in the style of a Roman coliseum with flags and Roman characters.

The square itself will host live interactive shows including static displays with horses and soldiers, along with free family workshops on Sagar Street, living history demonstrations, live street entertainment, interactive games, face painting, balloon modelling and much more.

The new Castleford Roman Festival builds on the success of last year's heritage open day.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's Deputy Leader, said: "We are extremely proud to launch the Castleford Roman Festival as a new major and unique event, celebrating our heritage by providing fun and entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

"I would encourage as many people, businesses and organisations as possible to come along  on Sunday to make our festival a real success this year and in years to come."

Philip Lunn, Managing Director of Lateral Property Group, said: "It is great that Castleford's Roman history is being celebrated in this exciting and entertaining way. Lateral is delighted to sponsor this Festival and we hope that people enjoy a great day."

In the run-up to the festival, local children are invited to create their own Roman shield which will be used to promote next year's event. The entry form can be downloaded from, with entries to be submitted by 6 September.

The winner will be selected on the day and will be contacted after the festival.
