Public consultation on improving facilities at Castleford railway station

PR ref: 5081

A public consultation is being launched on plans for a £3 million scheme to improve facilities at Castleford railway station.

People are being asked to share their thoughts on the project which is being developed by Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA).

Cllr Peter Box, Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Wakefield Council Leader said: "These important, proposed improvements at Castleford station are part of a West Yorkshire Combined Authority programme which also entails improvements to Bradford's Forster Square and Interchange, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds stations.

"Good transport links play a vital role in underpinning business growth and job creation. The proposed upgrade to facilities at Castleford will follow on from the Combined Authority's new bus station in the town, which just last week was shortlisted for a national award, and the impressive refurbishment of Wakefield Kirkgate rail station being completed."

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills at Wakefield Council, said: "This is an exciting scheme for Castleford, which will improve facilities at the railway station. I'd like to urge rail users and residents to share their views – either by attending an event, or by visiting the council website, to ensure that we have the facilities that people need."

The scheme will include a new waiting room, ticket vending, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), cycle storage, subway improvements and improved access for pedestrians and vehicles to the station.  There will also be improved links between the railway station and Castleford bus station

Funding will be through the West Yorkshire Transport Fund Station Improvements Package with Wakefield Council as a major stakeholder.

Options for the refurbishment are still being considered but it is estimated that the preferred scheme will cost around £3.2m.

Draft plans have been produced as part of the feasibility study to secure the funding required.

The Council and WYCA are now seeking feedback from people who use the train station and the wider community.

The public consultation will be held in Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre in Castleford on Thursday 15 October and Saturday 17th October between 10.00am and 2.00pm. Plans of the scheme will be on display and a questionnaire will be available.

The plans and questionnaire are also on the Council web site at

 until  November 6.
