Have you received your poll card?
Wakefield Council is delivering poll cards to local households – and any residents who do not receive their cards by April 7th are being asked to get in touch.
The polling cards are being sent to all registered voters in the district with details of their polling station and times of polling for the elections on May 7.
The General Election is on 7 May for three constituencies in the district –Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, Hemsworth and Wakefield. Voters will be deciding who will represent them as their Member of Parliament for the next five years.
On the same day one third of Wakefield Council's seats - 21- will also be up for election. In some parts of the district, voters will also be electing their town and parish councillors.
Residents who have not received a poll card by 7 April, including anyone who has recently moved to a new build property should contact the Electoral Services Office on 01924 305023.
The registration system changed in June 2014 and now each person is responsible for registering their details and ensuring that they are registered correctly.
The deadline to register to vote, is Monday 20 April and residents need to ensure that they are correctly registered ahead of this deadline.
Joanne Roney OBE, Returning Officer, said: "I would urge residents to take action and make sure they don't miss out and have their say.
"Even if you think you are already registered, it's important to double check. Many people think they are automatically registered because they pay council tax, but this isn't true, contact the Electoral Services Office to find out.
"If you move house or change your details, you will need to let us know as soon as possible because you will not be able to vote unless your name is on the register."
Residents who are unable to attend the polling station to vote, may be able to vote by post, or proxy. Contact Electoral Services for more information.
Registering is quick and simple, visit www.gov.uk/registertovote and follow the online prompts. You will need to give your national insurance number and date of birth when you register. Further information about registration and voting can be found at www.wakefield.gov.uk/elections.
