Date: 24/06/2014

Wakefield Council has launched its 2014 events at the Castles programme.

The event which takes place on Saturday 12 July at Pontefract Castle offers a real day out for the entire family including:

• Picnic in the Castle - Bring your picnic and enjoy children's activities, Viking re-enactment and pop classics from the 60s to the present day from 11am-4pm, in partnership with Pontefract Heritage Group. Admission is free.

• Proms in the Castle – Enjoy music from The West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra who will perform popular classics from Carmen and Swan Lake followed by a spectacular fireworks finale. This event is ticketed and starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are available in advance or on the gate.

Cllr Les Shaw, cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "The Proms in the Castle is a fantastic family day out and has quickly become one of the 'jewels in the crown' of the Pontefract Liquorice Festival Weekend.

"The programme of music this year should offer something for everyone and I encourage everyone to come and enjoy summer in the castles and buy their tickets now – as seats are strictly limited."
