Tributes paid to Normanton councillor

​Wakefield Council Leader Cllr Denise Jeffery has today paid tribute to serving councillor Alan Wassell, who sadly died on Saturday.

Labour councillor Alan Wassell had represented the Normanton ward since being elected in 2012.

Cllr Wassell had also sat on a number of committees including Planning and Highways, Standards and various overview and scrutiny committees such as Adults and Health and Community Safety, to which he was always an active contributor.

He was also a member of the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel up until his death.

Cllr Wassell had been battling cancer for a number of months.

​Wakefield Council Leader, Cllr Denise Jeffery, said: “I am extremely saddened to hear of Alan’s death and he will be much missed by his colleagues.

“Alan was a dedicated and well-respected local councillor who would do anything to help anybody.

“On behalf of the Council, I send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends at the difficult time.”

Cllr Wassell’s seat was due to be contested at this year’s local elections before they were postponed until next year. His seat will remain open until then under the Coronavirus Act 2020.
