Council children’s homes highly prasied by Ofsted
opened children’s homes, managed by Wakefield Council, have been awarded the
top rating possible by Ofsted inspectors.
children’s homes, in Hemsworth and South Elmsall, were opened in September last
year and were both rated as ‘good’ – the highest achievement that can be given
for homes open only five months.
homes provide care and accommodation for up to two children and young people
whose plan is to live in a medium or long-term residential setting.

homes had made good progress and had developed positive relationships with each
other and staff.

inspectors commenting: “The
registered manager is creative when looking at educating children about their
risk-taking behaviours. The management team are strong and lead by example
having a visible presence in the homes. The staff mirror the registered
manager’s approach to create a warm, nurturing and empowering environment for
the children as outlined in the homes statement of purpose.”
The hard-working staff at the children’s home in
Hemsworth were praised, with the report noting that ‘staff
encouragement has led to the children spending less time in their bedrooms and
more time with the staff and each other. As a consequence, their social skills
have improved, and they flourish in a caring, family atmosphere at the home’.
The environment at the children’s home in South
Elsmall is judged as ‘warm and comfortable’ with the report going
on to say that ‘the children personalise their home and take pride in the warm,
comfortable environment that they have created. Additionally, this sense of
belonging has extended to the community. The children go to the youth club,
take part in charity fundraising events and host activities at the local
