Staff from both homes

Recently opened children’s homes, managed by Wakefield Council, have been awarded the top rating possible by Ofsted inspectors.

The children’s homes, in Hemsworth and South Elmsall, were opened in September last year and were both rated as ‘good’ – the highest achievement that can be given for homes open only five months.

Both homes provide care and accommodation for up to two children and young people whose plan is to live in a medium or long-term residential setting.

Inspectors, who visited in January and February, said that the children living in both homes had made good progress and had developed positive relationships with each other and staff.

The leadership team, who oversee both homes, were also given a glowing report, with inspectors commenting: “The registered manager is creative when looking at educating children about their risk-taking behaviours. The management team are strong and lead by example having a visible presence in the homes. The staff mirror the registered manager’s approach to create a warm, nurturing and empowering environment for the children as outlined in the homes statement of purpose.”

The hard-working staff at the children’s home in Hemsworth were praised, with the report noting that ‘staff encouragement has led to the children spending less time in their bedrooms and more time with the staff and each other. As a consequence, their social skills have improved, and they flourish in a caring, family atmosphere at the home’.

The environment at the children’s home in South Elsmall is judged as ‘warm and comfortable’ with the report going on to say that ‘the children personalise their home and take pride in the warm, comfortable environment that they have created. Additionally, this sense of belonging has extended to the community. The children go to the youth club, take part in charity fundraising events and host activities at the local community centre’.
