Have your say on the future of Pontefract
plans are being formulated to shape the future of Pontefract and we are inviting
members of the public to put forward comments and ideas to support this
emerging plans – which will ultimately form the Pontefract Masterplan, entitled
‘Reconnecting Pontefract’ - will seek to address the loss of key links between
Pontefract town centre, the surrounding communities and key local assets such
as the castle, racecourse and the new Leisure Hub under construction in
Pontefract Park. It will also identify other areas for improvement in the town.
Council is now asking members of the public to take part in a consultation on
the initial Masterplanning work that has been completed and to share their
will also be seeking thoughts on the ‘Streets for People’ project, a scheme
which aims to improve the Horsefair area, between the town centre and castle,
for the benefit of cyclists and pedestrians.
The £1million ‘Streets for People’ project
is being funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Cllr Darren Byford, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth, said: "The Council has a unique opportunity to positively influence the development of Pontefract for years to come. The town has a special offer within the wider Wakefield district and the Masterplan is intended to help it to realise its potential, building on successes like the Liquorice Festival while also safeguarding its heritage.
"Please come along, have your say and help us make the changes that will take the town from strength to strength."
Cllr Kim Groves, Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's Transport Committee, said: "This project is another example of West Yorkshire's ambition to improve local places and their connections to enable walking, cycling and public transport to become the natural choice for shorter everyday journeys, helping to reduce air pollution and increase road safety and physical activity."
The initial Masterplan findings, together with two design options for changes on Horsefair and a separate set of proposals for improvements to the junction of North Baileygate and Southgate, will be available for public consultation in Pontefract Library from Saturday 8 February until Sunday 23 February 2020.
Masterplan consultants, Nash Partnership, will be hosting a launch event on 8 February from 10am until 4pm to introduce the work they are doing.
Following the event, officers will be available at the following times to discuss the plans with anyone who would like a further conversation or can't make the launch:
- Monday 10 February – 4pm-7pm
- Tuesday 11 February – 10am-2pm
- Wednesdays 12 February – 10am-2pm
- Friday 14 February – 10am-2pm
Those attending will be encouraged to complete a questionnaire to outline their views. The questionnaire will also be available as an online survey, together with additional information about the projects, from Saturday 8 February to coincide with the opening of the consultation at www.wakefield.gov.uk/ponteplan
A further consultation will follow later in the year in order to showcase a draft of the final Masterplan once the consultants have incorporated the public's views.
