Countdown to Christmas as light switch-ons announced

​It's almost that time of year again as details for the district's Christmas light switch-ons and special festive markets have been announced.

Lights will be switched on 15 November in Wakefield, 18 November in Pontefract and 19 November in Castleford.

Wakefield's Christmas lights will be switched on by Wakefield Trinity on Friday 15 November at 6pm, in the Cathedral Precinct.

Ridings FM will be hosting live entertainment from 4pm which will include live stage entertainment from local musicians.

The city will also be home to a fantastic Christmas-themed market throughout the day from 10am, with children's funfair rides and themed entertainment.

The Council is also holding special switch-on events in Castleford and Pontefract.

Local councillors will be joined by the Haribo Bear to switch-on the Pontefract Christmas lights on Monday 18 November at 6pm in the Market Place.

A Christmas market will run throughout the day from 12pm, and there will also be funfair rides and live entertainment on stage from 4pm with Ridings FM hosting.

On Tuesday 19 November, a Christmas Market will run throughout the day from 12pm, with the Castleford Town Centre Lights switch on at 6pm in the town centre.

Local councillors, Castleford Tigers JT and community groups will join in the light switch-on alongside live stage entertainment and hosted by Ridings FM from 4pm.

​Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said: "Once again we have a packed programme of events for our Christmas light switch-ons across the district.

"You can get started on your Christmas shopping during the day at our festive-themed markets and then enjoy lots of other entertainment ahead of the big switch-ons. There will be something for the whole family to enjoy."

Each of this year's events will also feature a performance by a 'Time to Shine' winner, a competition hosted by Ridings FM, in which listeners get to vote for their favourite local artist to perform at a light switch on:
