New leader appointed for Wakefield Council

Cllr Denise Jeffery will be the new Leader of Wakefield Council, from 1 December 2019.

The appointment was confirmed by a vote at Full Council on 16 October following the announcement from Cllr Peter Box CBE that he was stepping down as Leader at the end of November to focus on his new role as Chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire.

Cllr Jeffery, who will become Wakefield's first female Council Leader, has been the Deputy Leader for 11 years. She currently represents the Castleford Central and Glasshoughton Ward and has been a ward councillor for 30 years.

As a Cabinet member, she's held the portfolios covering regeneration, culture, tourism, sport, skills and economic growth.

Commenting on her appointment Cllr Jeffery said: "I am very pleased and honoured to have been confirmed as Wakefield Council's new Leader, from December.

"I'd like to thank Cllr Box for all his work over the last 21 years and I am looking forward to building on the Council's achievements.

"My priority now is to work with Peter and the Chief Executive to ensure a smooth transition."

Elected members will be given the opportunity to reflect on Cllr Box's achievements as Leader and pay tribute to his career in local government at Full Council on 13 November. He will continue to sit as ward councillor to April 2020.
