School swimming

We provide a fully comprehensive School Swimming Programme for all primary and secondary schools. The School Swimming Programme is held across five facilities within the district:

  • Sun Lane Leisure

  • Normanton Leisure

  • Featherstone Sports Complex

  • Pontefract Swimming Pool

  • Minsthorpe Leisure

Working in partnership with Swim England we teach over 3000 students each academic term and follow Swim England's and Ofsted's recommendation that every pupil should attend School Swimming for a minimum of 37 to 39 weeks, across three terms. With weekly sessions lasting between 30 and 45 minutes (7-11yrs). With the expectation that before transition to high school each pupil will be able to;

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

What makes us different?

Our School Swimming Programme has a bespoke programme which is divided into ability categories. Each stage has been developed covering the core elements of aquatic fundamentals, swimming stroke development and Sport England's movement literacy guidelines. We thoroughly believe in rewarding each individual pupil's achievements every step of the way.

We also understand the importance to promote a cross learning curriculum that covers a variety of subjects and skills for a multitude of reasons. We recognise that curriculum time is important and we aim to fully utilize every aspect. Throughout the academic year we also include a series of varied optional, events from swimathon to world book day (aquatic themed of course).  We pride ourselves on being able engage pupils in a fun, safe and stimulating environment.

Swimwear

Male Pupils wear shorts above the knee and female pupils are to wear a one piece swimming costume.

We retain the discretion to refuse any Pupil from receiving swimming instruction and entering the pool where their swimwear and/or jewellery is deemed unsafe and/or unsuitable.

Homework

Swimming should be fun. Any opportunity to practice between school swimming lessons will help. Try to take your child swimming as often as possible. Do not try to teach them to swim, as this can be frustrating for you both. It is far better to play and enjoy quality time relaxing together, reaffirming the fun aspect of water and swimming.
