Children Missing Education

Children Missing Education (CME) are children of compulsory school age who are not on a school roll and who are not receiving a suitable alternative education (for example at home). These children may be at a greater risk of harm. The Education Welfare Service is responsible for monitoring and tracking young people who are not in the education system, and for supporting their entry into school.

If a child goes missing from education the school has a responsibility to make reasonable enquiries to find the child. If they are unable to do so they should refer to the CME officer in Education Welfare. Our CME guidance for schools provides information for schools, providers and professionals on Children Missing Education.

If a member of the public is concerned that a child may not be in education they can contact the Education Welfare Service CME officer on 01924 307449.
