Support for families with disabled children
Wakefield Council offers a range of services for children with disabilities, their families or carers. Some of these services are available to all within the Wakefield District and some require an assessment under the Common Assessment Framework (CAF), to be undertaken by a professional who knows your child.
Some services require a specialist assessment by a social worker; your needs as a carer can also be assessed.
Information, support and advice
The first point of call for information, advice and signposting if you are a parent/carer of a disabled child, or a professional working with the family, is to contact Wakefield Early Support Advice Information and Liaison (WESAIL).
The Information Network enables families of children with disabilities or additional needs and professionals to receive regular information and newsletters about services and events for disabled children. The Information Network is the Local Authority’s register of disabled children which enables Wakefield Council to more accurate information about the numbers of disabled children in Wakefield and to help plan the right kind of services.
WESAIL also provides specific support to families of children and young people (up to the age of 25) with a disability; for example providing Early Support, through a district wide Designated Keyworker Service, for children aged 8 and under with a disability. A team of workers from other agencies (Social Care, Connexions and Health) support this service.
Children with complex care needs
The Children with Complex Care Needs Team is a specialist social work team that offers social work assessment and support to disabled children, young people and their families. Referrals to the Children with Complex Care Needs Team must be made through Social Care Direct.
A range of short breaks for children, young people and their families can be provided at various times; in the home and elsewhere.
Any family caring for a disabled child can contact Social Care Direct and request an assessment for short break provision.
For more information on the range of Short Break services provided, who is eligible and how this is assessed please visit the Short Breaks section on Wakefield’s Local Offer website.
