Pugneys Country Park is a 250 acre site which was previously an open cast mine as well as a sand and gravel quarry and was turned into a country park in 1985. Now celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the new look Pugneys sees another transformation to bring fun and adventure to the heart of Wakefield.

There is lots to do - have a play with the outdoor play equipment or visti Pugney Playland, hire a bike (from 3 May) or visit the café. There’s also our lovely local and exotic food offering to try!
Pugneys beach - bring your buckets and spades and have fun in the sand! Deckchairs will also be available in the high season and holidays.
High seasons and holidays, this is the zone to be! Unleash the inner child, the activity zone promises lots of adventure and fun whatever your age! Slides, ride and land trains, and a beach hut providing a perfect picnic!
With lovely views of the lake and the historic Sandal Castle, it makes a great place to ponder, or to find the path to explore the castle!
For the wildlife enthusiasts and explorers among you! Check out the different habitats and see what you can see. The wildlife trails, homes and the hides (all coming from 9 May) make it a fun place to discover new things.
Close to the Watersports Centre, you’ll enter the chillout zone. A place to relax, watch the activities on the lake, have a BBQ (from 23 May), an ice cream, may be take a ride on the steam train, or stroke the birds of prey, the choice is yours!
It might be the last zone we mention but this zone is the one for the water babies among you - why not push the boat out and try pedaloes, zorbs or if you want to learn a skill or two how about canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, windsurfing or dinghy sailing - the choice is yours!
The Watersports Centre has been pulling in those avid water adrenaline fans for many years, courses available for adults and juniors:
- kayaking and canoeing
- multi-watersports courses
We also offer equipment hire, available daily:
- dinghy sailing
- stand up paddleboards
- bike hire
