Thornes Park is Wakefield's main open space, less than a mile from the city centre.
A management plan for the park is available to download and is expected to be adopted by the Council in March 2016.
The park offers 60 hectares of open space to explore and enjoy including a 2 mile circular path that follows the boundary of the park - and if this is not challenging enough there are several exercise stations on the route.
There is a mound in the centre of the park which was once the site of a motte and bailey castle and now provides spectacular views of Wakefield.
There are 4 tennis courts, an 18 hole pitch and putt, a putting green and 2 bowls greens which are available for "Pay and Play" when the ticket office is open. The nearest car park to the courts is off Denby Dale Road near the Holmfield Hotel.
The ticket office is open every day from the Easter School Holidays until September. In October, it is open at weekends and during school holidays. It then closes from November until the Easter break.
