The Cathedral Square is to become a new central point in the city. It will feature a new outdoor events space, where people can gather or attend a range of events.

Bread Street is being restored as a main access route to the square together with its early 20th century views of the Cathedral.

Plans

  • buy and demolish two 1970s office and shop buildings by 2025
  • create the large outdoor events space by spring 2026
  • provide Shop Improvement Grants to help local store owners improve their facades by spring 2026

Benefits

  • a new outdoor space for events and markets to attract visitors to the city
  • new and improved pedestrian routes into the city centre
  • increased city centre footfall and spending

  • June 2022 – The scheme’s Business Case was submitted to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in June

  • July 2022 - Shop improvement grant scheme opened in July. Purchase of the former Ladbrokes building completed. Talks are continuing with the owner of the neighbouring property
