Wakefield District Local Plan 2036

Update on Consultation on the Publication Draft of the Plan

We are currently preparing the Publication draft of the plan.

Unfortunately, due to the current Coronavirus emergency, the Publication consultation scheduled for May 2020 has had to be postponed until October 2020.

Postponing the consultation will delay the submission of the draft plan to the Secretary of State for Examination until early 2021, and the adoption of the plan until early 2022.

Initial Draft Local Plan Consultation - January 2019

The Council is undertaking consultation on the Initial Draft Wakefield District Local Plan 2036.  The consultation follows on from the Early Engagement consultation, which took place in October to December 2017.

The Initial Draft Plan sets out the Council’s planning policies for securing growth, investment, sustainable development and improving the environment in the district.  The Local Plan will cover the period to 2036 and will provide a comprehensive, updated planning framework of policies, site allocations and designations. The Local Plan will be used to promote development and to assess development proposals.

The Initial Draft Plan consultation took place from Thursday 10 January to Wednesday 20 February 2019. Comments made during this consultation will inform the next stage of preparing the Local Plan. The documents and comment form are available to view and download below.

An exhibition about the Local Plan was held at Wakefield One until Thursday 7 February. The exhibition was manned on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12noon and 2pm where officers were able to answer questions about policies and proposals in the Local Plan.

Site Options Technical Consultation

Following Early Engagement consultation carried out during October to December 2017, we are considering the options for development sites to include in an initial draft local plan. The development site options originate from various sources, notably the Early Engagement Call for Sites; existing, undeveloped adopted local plan allocations; Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment; and Brownfield Land Register.

We are seeking advice and comments from technical consultees within and external to the Council to help us make informed decisions about the suitability and deliverability of potential sites; any constraints on development; and the need for additional infrastructure to support development.

Early engagement consultation - October 2017

We are preparing a new Local Plan to guide the future growth of Wakefield District up to 2036. The Early Engagement document considers the key issues facing the district and proposes some development options for growth and where new development should take place.

The Early Engagement document is accompanied by a Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report. The purpose of Sustainability Appraisal is to assess the environmental, social and economic effects of the Plan. The Council is also calling for information about potential development sites.

The documents are available to view and download here:

The consultation took place for six weeks from Thursday 26 October to Wednesday 6 December 2017. Comments made will inform the next stage of preparing the Draft Local Plan. Further consultations on the Draft Local Plan will then be carried out in autumn 2018.

The comments received can be viewed on the Consultation Portal.

Copies of the documents are also available at main libraries across the district during normal opening hours and at the Customer Access Point in Wakefield One, Burton Street, Wakefield (Mon - Fri 8.30am - 5pm).

The timescales and stages for the Local Plan preparation are set out in the Local Development Scheme 2017
