Using the Map Tools

Within the map page there are various mapping functions and tools available. Further details on how to use them can be found below.

Zoom Tool

Zoom Tool - allows you to zoom in and out of the map.

Clicking on the icons at either end to alters zoom level Zoom Outto zoom out or Zoom Into zoom in. Alternately, click on the bars to move quickly to specific zoom levels. The bar indicates the point you are at within the available zoom range.

Pan Tool

Pan Tool - allows you to move the map in the direction of the arrows.

Clicking on the arrow will moves the map in the same direction.

Reset Tool

Reset Button - resets the map location.

Clicking this button returns the map to its original location and zoom level.

Large Map

Large Map Button - allows you to enlarge the map image

Clicking this button enlarges the map image. Note enlarging the map will increase the image size, which may cause some problems for anyone using a dial-up connection.

Small Map

Small Map Button - allows you to revert the map to the original size.

Note: This button is greyed out /unavailable unless in Large Map mode. Simply click on this to revert the map to a smaller size.

Print

Print Button - allows you to print the map as currently viewed on screen.

Clicking this button brings up a pop-up window. Select you paper size (A4 or A5) and add optional text if required. The preview button shows you what your print out will look like. If correct, click the print button to send a copy to the printer.

Information Tool

Information Tool - allows you to call up any information relating to a selected point/ feature on the map.

When the cursor is moved over the map it will change from an arrow to a cross. Move the cursor over a feature and click once to retrieve information relating to the object you clicked on. To identify what features you can get information about look at the Legend Tool first. Note that you may encounter difficulties getting the information tool to return the results for the features at a high zoom level (above 1000 meters) if so simply change the zoom level to something lower.

Legend Tool

Legend Button - allows you to call up a Cartographic Legend identifying the additional features visible of the map.

Clicking on this activates a pop-up window showing what the additional objects that have been added to the map and what they represent. Use the Information Tool to click on the objects on the map to provide further information. Note the legend will change when the Map Theme is altered.

Aerial Photograph

Aerial Photography Button - allows you change your map view to an Aerial Photograph.

Clicking on this changes from the Map View to the Aerial Photography of the same location. Note that due to copyright restrictions, the size of the image is smaller than that of a cartographic map.

Map View

Map View Button - allows you to revert to a map view.

Note that this tool is greyed out / unavailable unless displaying Aerial Photography. Simply click to revert back to a map view.

Themes Tool

Themes Tool - enables the selection of individual ‘themed’ layers of information to be shown on the map.

Clicking on the drop down menu allows selection of a different map theme changing the information represented on the map. Note that the Legend Tool will also pop-up to show the new information that is now available.

Nearest Facilities

Nearest Facilities Tool - This feature allows you to find the nearest chosen service from your current location.

Simply click on the top drop down menu and select what service you are interested in. Then from the second drop down select the distance from your current location that you want to search. Click on the Search button and a pop-up window will appear with your results.
